Where do your people fall?

Mattering has two halves: adding value, and feeling valued. Put them on a grid and every person on your team is standing somewhere on it. This page is a way to find out where.

Take one person at a time and find the sentence they would say.

Feeling valued, more this way
"I'm appreciated, but I'm not sure why I'm here."
Adding value is unclear / Feels valued
"I matter here."
Adding value is clear / Feels valued
"I feel disconnected."
Adding value is unclear / Does not feel valued
"My work matters, but I feel invisible."
Adding value is clear / Does not feel valued

How to run it

One person at a time, one sentence each.

01Take one person on your team. Not the team in general, one person.

02Find the sentence they would say today. Not the one you hope they would say.

03Place them on the grid, then move to the next person.

04When everyone is placed, look at where they cluster. That pattern is your team's answer to the mattering question.

What the pattern tells you

A cluster in one position is not a verdict on your people. It is information about what they are getting from you. The six practices in Mattering at Work are how leaders change what people are getting.
